'Happy identity': right-wing criticism of approach considered too conciliatory towards Islam and diversity

No legal proceedings

During the right-wing primary, Alain Juppé defended a concept of 'happy identity', integration and diversity, rejecting escalating rhetoric about Islam. His opponents accused him of naivety and weakness towards communitarianism, while he warned that an identity-based escalation could cause a serious social divide.

  1. 1997

1997 dissolution: governing majority defeated and departure from Matignon

The early dissolution of the National Assembly decided by Jacques Chirac in 1997, with the support of his Prime Minister, led to the right's defeat and a period of cohabitation with Lionel Jospin. Alain Juppé, already deeply unpopular, left Matignon and the presidency of the RPR.
