Vedanta demerger: Indian government raises debt objections before NCLT approval

No legal proceedings

Reported objections concerned, in particular, protection of debt recovery and certain financial information and liabilities. Vedanta disputed the criticisms and defended the project as creating value. In December 2025, the National Company Law Tribunal approved a split into five entities, implementation of which was to continue in 2026. The ultimately favourable regulatory outcome must be retained alongside the initial objections.

Vedanta Resources: debt pressure, Moody's downgrade and high dividends from Indian subsidiary

No legal proceedings

Moody's downgraded the group, citing material refinancing risk. Repeated dividends from Vedanta Ltd came under scrutiny because they provided cash to the indebted parent. Agarwal and the group stressed that there had been no default and that they could meet their obligations. Subsequent refinancings and rating improvements reduced the pressure. The controversy concerns financial policy, not established accounting fraud.

Viceroy Research: allegations of 'draining' Vedanta Ltd and review of complaint in Singapore

Allegations

The short seller criticised, in particular, dividend financing and debt transactions. Vedanta described the allegations as malicious, selective and baseless, maintaining that its dividends were lawful and finances sound. In Singapore, a complaint was assigned a reference and was under review, which does not mean that a formal investigation or offence had been established. The accusations remain explicitly presented as such.

Sterlite Copper in Thoothukudi: pollution, deadly protests, closure and rejection of reopening application

Civil / administrative proceedings

Opponents accused the plant of pollution and challenged its expansion plans. In May 2018, a protest ended in police shootings that killed 13 people: these deaths are attributable to police intervention and are not presented as killings committed by Vedanta or Agarwal. Tamil Nadu closed the site; Vedanta disputed the environmental allegations. In February 2024, the Supreme Court rejected the application to reopen the smelter.

Konkola Copper Mines: provisional liquidation imposed in Zambia, later found procedurally improper, followed by Vedanta's return

Civil / administrative proceedings

ZCCM-IH and the Zambian authorities accused Vedanta of failing to fulfil investment and contractual obligations. Vedanta initiated several court and arbitration proceedings. The Zambian Supreme Court subsequently concluded that the liquidation had been improperly initiated, and a settlement arrangement enabled Vedanta to regain control in 2024 after substantial payments to creditors. The case therefore had a partly favourable legal outcome for Vedanta.

Electoral bonds: Vedanta among largest purchasers of opaque scheme struck down by Supreme Court

No legal proceedings

The scheme allowed political donations with a high degree of opacity before the Indian Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional. Vedanta was among the largest identified purchasers. The event is retained because of transparency and political influence concerns linked to a company controlled by Agarwal; it does not establish that Vedanta or Agarwal committed an offence by purchasing bonds while the scheme was in force.

Hindustan Zinc: proposed $2.98 billion purchase of African assets from Vedanta blocked by Indian government

No legal proceedings

The government feared that Hindustan Zinc's cash reserves would be used to support Vedanta Resources' debt through a related-party transaction. Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta defended the industrial rationale and governance procedures. The proposal eventually expired without obtaining the necessary approvals. No personal embezzlement by Agarwal is established.

Zambia: more than 2 500 villagers bring pollution claim over Nchanga, settled without admission of liability

Civil / administrative proceedings

More than 2 500 claimants alleged that discharges from the Nchanga mine had contaminated water and harmed livelihoods. The UK Supreme Court had allowed the action to proceed in England. In January 2021, the parties reached a confidential settlement without any admission of liability by Vedanta or KCM. Agarwal's personal liability was not adjudicated.

Goa: Supreme Court cancels 88 iron ore mining lease renewals, including Vedanta's

Civil / administrative proceedings

The decision halted mining by numerous operators, including Vedanta, finding that the State of Goa had unlawfully renewed the leases without an appropriate new procedure. This is a sector-wide regulatory decision affecting Vedanta, not a personal conviction of Anil Agarwal for illegal mining.

Niyamgiri: bauxite mining project rejected after Dongria Kondh mobilisation and village consultations

Civil / administrative proceedings

The project in the Niyamgiri hills was challenged by Dongria Kondh communities citing their religious, land and environmental rights. The Indian Supreme Court required local consultation; the villages consulted rejected the project, and the Environment Ministry refused forest clearance in 2014. Vedanta subsequently stated that it did not wish to mine without community consent. The event is an environmental governance controversy; it does not establish a personal offence by Agarwal.
