2018 Iranian protests: comments about 'white hats' criticised, followed by clarification condemning repression

No legal proceedings

In early January 2018, Thornberry warned against automatically assuming that all protesters in Iran were liberal democrats, raising the possibility of organised groups or 'white hats'. Politicians and commentators accused her of being too accommodating towards Tehran. She subsequently clarified her position by explicitly condemning violence by the Iranian authorities and defending protesters' rights.

2016 Trident review: public confrontation with Labour MPs and challenges to her arguments

No legal proceedings

In February 2016, amid Labour divisions over renewing Trident, Thornberry argued that a technological and strategic reassessment remained possible. At a heated parliamentary party meeting, she was interrupted and challenged, particularly after drawing an analogy with the speed of aviation developments since the Spitfire. The controversy concerned an internal political dispute, not legal wrongdoing.

2016 Sky News interview: inability to name foreign leaders, followed by sexism allegation against presenter

No legal proceedings

In September 2016, while holding the opposition foreign affairs portfolio, Thornberry was asked several knowledge questions about international leaders by Sky News and failed to answer them. She subsequently accused the presenter of using a 'pub quiz' approach and sexism. The episode fuelled criticism of her command of the portfolio, while she challenged the interview method.

Rochester tweet showing house covered in English flags: snobbery allegations and Shadow Cabinet resignation

No legal proceedings

During the Rochester and Strood by-election, Thornberry posted a photograph on Twitter showing a house decorated with St George's flags and a white van, captioned simply 'Image from #Rochester'. The post sparked major controversy over Labour's alleged class contempt. Thornberry said she had not intended to mock or insult the owner, apologised and left her Shadow Cabinet position.

2006 Electoral Commission press release altered: parliamentary complaint, but no Code breach

No legal proceedings

In 2006, Emily Thornberry inserted a personal quotation into an Electoral Commission press release and circulated it to journalists in a form that could appear official. The Parliamentary Commissioner established the facts but found neither an intention to deceive nor a clear breach of the Code of Conduct; the report described her conduct as unwise and unfortunate. The favourable outcome must be retained alongside the incident.
