2022–2026: Reversal on militarisation of Araucanía and sustained use of state of emergency

No legal proceedings

Having criticised the militarisation of Macrozona Sur during his campaign, Boric declared a state of emergency in May 2022 allowing the armed forces to support security operations in Araucanía and provinces of Biobío, a measure subsequently renewed many times. The reversal became an enduring controversy over the consistency of his Mapuche and security policies.

2023–2026: Caso Convenios / Democracia Viva — irregular transfers to foundations linked to governing coalition

Investigation — against a third party

Protagonist not prosecuted — these proceedings are not counted in their formal charges or convictions.

The 'Caso Convenios' scandal exposed direct transfers of public funds to foundations, including Democracia Viva, linked to activists within Boric's coalition. The Contraloría identified deficiencies in justification, selection and oversight, and the case led to criminal investigations, resignations and a cabinet reshuffle.

2024–2026: Codelco–SQM lithium agreement — direct negotiations and objections from Atacameño communities

Civil / administrative proceedings

Boric's government instructed Codelco to negotiate a partnership with SQM to continue and develop lithium extraction in the Salar de Atacama until 2060, with majority control by the state-owned company. The decision to negotiate directly with SQM and consultation with Indigenous communities prompted criticism concerning transparency, competition and consent.

2024: Handling of Caso Monsalve — delay, government accounts and criticism of La Moneda's response

Formally charged — against Manuel Monsalve

Protagonist not prosecuted — these proceedings are not counted in their formal charges or convictions.

Boric was informed that a complaint alleging rape and sexual abuse had been made against Interior Undersecretary Manuel Monsalve before the latter resigned. The delay between notification, Monsalve's continuation of certain official activities and his departure from government, alongside changing accounts of what authorities knew, triggered a crisis of confidence.

2025–2026: Presidency pays private lawyer in Allende house case — investigation into misuse of public funds reopened on appeal

Investigation

The Presidency entered into a direct contract worth approximately 13.8 million pesos with lawyer Jonatan Valenzuela to defend Boric in the Allende house case. A complaint alleged misuse of public funds. After a final dismissal (non-lieu) ordered in November 2025 at prosecutors' request, the Santiago Court of Appeal overturned the dismissal in January 2026 and ordered the investigation to continue, finding that the available evidence did not justify definitively closing the case.

2024–2025: Complaint over distribution of intimate images — investigation followed by final dismissal (non-lieu) establishing Boric's non-involvement

Investigation

A woman who had known Boric in 2013 filed a complaint in 2024 concerning, among other things, the non-consensual distribution of intimate images. Prosecutors carried out digital investigations and took statements before seeking closure. On 6 February 2025, the court ordered a full and final dismissal (non-lieu), finding that he had not participated in the alleged act.

2024–2025: Aborted purchase of Salvador Allende's house — constitutional conflict, two ministers depart and Isabel Allende removed

Investigation

Boric's government sought to buy Salvador Allende's house for approximately 933 million pesos to turn it into a museum. The transaction was halted when it emerged that two co-owners, Defence Minister Maya Fernández and Senator Isabel Allende, were constitutionally prohibited from contracting with the state. The episode led to the departure of National Assets Minister Marcela Sandoval, followed by Maya Fernández, and the Constitutional Court ultimately terminated Isabel Allende's senatorial mandate.

No legal proceedings

Boric granted pardons to people convicted of offences connected with the 2019 protests and to former militant Jorge Mateluna. Errors in preparing and communicating the cases, along with some beneficiaries' criminal records, triggered a political crisis leading to the departures of Justice Minister Marcela Ríos and Chief of Staff Matías Meza-Lopehandía.

2022: 'Gabinete Irina Karamanos' official designation introduced then withdrawn

No legal proceedings

An administrative resolution renamed a presidential office 'Gabinete Irina Karamanos', after the president's partner, and assigned it a coordinating role. Following considerable controversy over personalising a public institution and the status of the First Lady, the government swiftly reversed the designation and described it as an administrative error.
