Travel restrictions imposed by Washington on his delegation during UN visit

Civil / administrative proceedings

In April 2024, the United States imposed additional restrictions on the delegation led by Amir-Abdollahian in New York: travel was restricted to an area within two blocks of UN headquarters, the Iranian mission, the ambassador's residence and JFK Airport. Washington explicitly linked the measure to concerns about Iran's destabilising activities and support for terrorism.

In March 2023, questioned by Christiane Amanpour about arrests and accounts of sexual violence in detention, he maintained that nobody had been arrested during peaceful demonstrations and described several accounts as "unfounded" or targeted reports.

Iranian drones supplied to Russia: partial admission in November 2022 following repeated denials

No legal proceedings

After weeks of Iranian denials of supplying drones to Russia, Amir-Abdollahian acknowledged in November 2022 that Iran had delivered a "small number" of drones to Moscow, while maintaining that the transfers had taken place several months before the invasion of Ukraine. The admission caused significant controversy because Iranian Shahed drones were then being used against Ukraine.

Removal as Deputy Foreign Minister in 2016 and controversy over regional disagreements with Zarif

No legal proceedings

In June 2016, Zarif replaced Amir-Abdollahian as Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs. His removal sparked controversy among conservatives: some media claimed it had resulted from demands by Arab or Western countries, while others cited disagreements with the Rouhani–Zarif team over Syria and regional policy.
