HP–Autonomy civil trial: liability established in UK, damages subsequently set at approximately $1.24 billion

Civil / administrative proceedings

In the civil proceedings brought following the acquisition of Autonomy, the High Court concluded in 2022 that HP had substantially proved its allegations of fraud and misrepresentation against Lynch and Sushovan Hussain. The subsequent judgment on quantum greatly reduced HP's initial claims. In March 2026, the High Court refused Lynch's estate permission to appeal, and HP reported a total of approximately $1.24 billion including damages and interest. The Lynch family continues to maintain that HP's losses resulted from its own failures after the acquisition and could still apply directly to the Court of Appeal.

Extradition and US criminal trial: complete acquittal in June 2024

Acquitted / conviction overturned

US federal prosecutors accused Lynch of participating in a scheme to inflate Autonomy's financial results before its sale to HP. He fought extradition from the United Kingdom and was then tried in California. The jury acquitted him on all counts submitted for a verdict in June 2024. This favourable criminal outcome must be distinguished from the British civil proceedings, where the standard of proof and findings differed.

Darktrace: links with Lynch and Autonomy ecosystem regarded as reputational risk

No legal proceedings

Invoke Capital, founded by Lynch, was among Darktrace's early backers, and several former Autonomy staff held senior roles. The company itself described certain links and proceedings involving Lynch as potential risks during its initial public offering, while investors and media questioned its culture and governance. Darktrace emphasised that Lynch held no operational or advisory role within the company. These sources establish no personal wrongdoing by Lynch at Darktrace.

Autonomy: HP writes down $8.8 billion and accuses former management of accounting irregularities

No legal proceedings

A year after acquiring Autonomy, HP announced a massive write-down and accused former management of inflating the group's performance. Mike Lynch rejected the allegations, arguing that HP was seeking a scapegoat and had mishandled the integration. This event retains the status of public allegations made in 2012; the subsequent civil judgments and criminal acquittal are dealt with separately.
