2007 plea agreement: planned dropping of rape charges, mass protests, judicial approval then Katsav's withdrawal

Formally charged

In June 2007, Katsav accepted an agreement that would have removed the rape charges in exchange for a guilty plea to lesser sexual offences and a non-custodial sentence, while resigning from the presidency. The agreement prompted strong public opposition and demonstrations. The High Court ultimately refused to annul it, but Katsav withdrew from it in April 2008 and chose to stand trial.
