E20: conflict-of-interest allegations involving his sons' businesses, fuel debate and legal battle against deepfakes
As E20 blending became widespread, criticism focused on reduced fuel efficiency in some vehicles and especially on expansion of ethanol businesses associated with Gadkari's sons. Congress alleged a conflict of interest, while social media content took the claims further through fabricated videos and deepfakes.
- State of the evidence
- political allegations, family business links, ministerial statements and High Court decisions documented
- Legal status — source text
- no judicial finding of a conflict of interest; in August 2026 Bombay High Court ordered removal of deepfake/abusive content identified by Gadkari while distinguishing legitimate criticism
- Attribution
- Gadkari is a major public proponent of ethanol but says he does not administer E20, which falls under the Petroleum Ministry; genuine family business interests in the sector do not prove that the policy was devised for his benefit
