Agression en détention et décès : enquête correctionnelle sur les circonstances

Investigation

Pickton a été agressé par un autre détenu à l'Établissement de Port-Cartier le 19 mai 2024 et est mort à l'hôpital le 31 mai. Le Service correctionnel a ouvert un comité d'enquête national sur l'incident et a publié ses conclusions en 2025.

La Cour suprême du Canada a rejeté l'appel de Pickton et maintenu ses six condamnations pour meurtre au deuxième degré. Quelques jours plus tard, la poursuite a suspendu les vingt chefs de meurtre au premier degré qui restaient.

Six condamnations pour meurtre au deuxième degré et peine à perpétuité

Conviction

À l'issue du procès sur six victimes, le jury a acquitté Pickton des six chefs de meurtre au premier degré mais l'a déclaré coupable de six meurtres au deuxième degré. Il a reçu une peine à perpétuité avec la période maximale d'inadmissibilité à la libération conditionnelle.

Séparation du procès : six chefs jugés d'abord sur les 26 restant

Investigation

Une fouille de la propriété de Pickton à Port Coquitlam en 2002 a déclenché l'enquête criminelle qui a conduit à son arrestation et à une série croissante d'accusations de meurtre. Au total, 27 chefs de meurtre au premier degré ont été déposés, dont un a ensuite été annulé.

En 1997, Pickton a été accusé de tentative de meurtre, voies de fait avec une arme, séquestration et voies de fait graves après l'agression d'une femme. La poursuite a décidé de suspendre les chefs en janvier 1998.
