2025-2026

Very harsh rhetoric against Israel: a "greater threat" than Iran and condemnation of "Talmudic ambitions"

No legal proceedings

In December 2025, Turki said Israel now represented a greater threat to regional stability than Iran and called on the United States to "contain" it. In June 2026, in an opinion article, he called on Israel to abandon what he termed its "Talmudic ambitions" and "bloody brutality", while also attacking Iran's regional ambitions and allied militias. These expressions fuelled strong polarisation around his positions.

Public contacts with Israeli officials: handshakes and meetings prompting accusations of normalisation

No legal proceedings

A public handshake between Turki and Israeli Deputy Minister Danny Ayalon at the Munich conference in 2010 prompted unusually intense debate in the Arab press about Saudi-Israeli contacts. In 2016, a public meeting in Washington with former Israeli National Security Adviser Yaakov Amidror again attracted criticism in Arab media, accusing him of encouraging normalisation with Israel.

Zacarias Moussaoui's unproven allegations of financial support for al-Qaeda

No legal proceedings

In a deposition connected with civil proceedings, Zacarias Moussaoui claimed in 2015 that several members of the Saudi royal family, including Turki al-Faisal, had supported or financed al-Qaeda. These statements were widely disputed and do not constitute a judicial finding of responsibility by Turki.

Afghanistan: Saudi support for mujahideen, ties with Taliban and failure to secure bin Laden's extradition

No legal proceedings

As head of Saudi intelligence, Turki played a central role in assisting Afghan mujahideen against the Soviet Union and in Riyadh's subsequent relations with the Taliban. He acknowledged meeting Osama bin Laden in the 1980s and negotiating with Mullah Omar in 1998 to secure his extradition to Saudi Arabia. The failure of these negotiations and Riyadh's previous proximity to Afghan networks came under intense scrutiny after 9/11.
