I. Documented controversies

01

1969–années 1980

1969–1980s: Testimony on Mittelwerk, protection of his image and subsequent posthumous historical reassessment

No legal proceedings

Von Braun was questioned as a witness in connection with the West German trial of Mittelwerk officials and acknowledged having seen the underground conditions. NASA sought to limit media exposure. After his death, declassified files and research into Dora made the earlier biography, which largely omitted his Nazi past, untenable.

1943–1945

1943–1945: V-2 production at Mittelwerk using forced labour from Mittelbau-Dora prisoners

No legal proceedings

After the bombing of Peenemünde, V-2 production was transferred to the underground Mittelwerk factory, supplied with prisoners from the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp. Conditions were deadly. Von Braun visited the site repeatedly, and NASA historical research concludes that he knew of the appalling conditions and participated in decisions concerning use of this workforce.

II. Documented background

Documented biographical or institutional milestones (elections, appointments, foundings, acquisitions…). These are not controversies and are not counted as such.

  1. 1937-05-01
