Deterioration of public finances: Senate criticism and disputed accusations of concealment

No legal proceedings

The deterioration of the public deficit between initial forecasts and actual results for 2023-2024 prompted the Senate Finance Committee to investigate the warnings available to Bercy and the information provided to Parliament. The Senate report of November 2024 denounced 'budgetary irresponsibility', 'double standards in public statements' and insufficient information given to Parliament. In December 2025, the rapporteur-general stated that he possessed documents contradicting certain statements by Bruno Le Maire.

Motorway privatisation: role at Matignon and lasting criticism of safeguards granted to concessionaires

No legal proceedings

Bruno Le Maire was an adviser to Dominique de Villepin at Matignon when the privatisation of motorway companies was decided in 2005, and chief of staff in 2006 when it was implemented. The concessions' subsequent high profitability and the limited scope for State intervention fuelled numerous parliamentary and public criticisms. Le Maire himself acknowledged in 2018 that mistakes had been made and safeguards were insufficient.

Report on motorway profitability: controversy over Bercy's response to 'excess profits'

No legal proceedings

A joint report by the Inspection générale des finances and CGEDD, produced in 2021 and subsequently made public following press revelations, estimated that certain motorway concessions had achieved profitability far above that anticipated at the time of privatisation. Bercy's handling of the matter and the absence of immediate measures to shorten the concessions fuelled accusations of inaction in the face of motorway companies' profits.

Social benefits sent 'to the Maghreb': accusations of echoing far-right prejudices

No legal proceedings

Bruno Le Maire's publication of the novel 'Fugue américaine', containing several explicit sexual scenes, prompted mockery and criticism in spring 2023 amid the pensions crisis, high inflation and a downgrade of France's sovereign credit rating. Opponents and even government members questioned the time devoted to writing by a minister responsible for major economic issues.
