Holyoake affair: extortion, blackmail and intimidation allegations dismissed by High Court

Civil / administrative proceedings

The dispute arose from a £12 million loan provided by Christian Candy's company. Following a lengthy trial, the High Court dismissed all Holyoake's claims. The judge made credibility criticisms but did not uphold allegations of duress, unlawful intimidation or other alleged wrongdoing. The allegations are therefore retained with their favourable outcome for the Candy brothers.

Offshore structures and Monaco tax exile status

No legal proceedings

The Panama Papers highlighted a £27 million property transaction using offshore companies that potentially attracted very little UK tax. During the Holyoake trial, Christian Candy was also questioned about his Monaco tax status. Candy stated that he strictly complied with the rules, and CPC indicated that appropriate taxes had been paid. No personal tax fraud is established.

Complete Retreats: litigation funding challenged as 'champertous'

No legal proceedings

In the Complete Retreats bankruptcy, CPC was to finance an action by the trustee in exchange for a substantial share of recoveries. Candy's opponents condemned the arrangement as champerty and a means of harassment. The Connecticut bankruptcy court rejected those arguments and approved the agreement.

Default on 9900 Wilshire financing and loss of Beverly Hills project

No legal proceedings

The Candy brothers had purchased the site for approximately $500 million in 2007. Following the property crisis and drying up of financing, the loan went into default and title to the property was transferred to lenders in 2010. This is a documented financial failure, not established fraud.

Chelsea Barracks: legal dispute with Qatari Diar following Prince Charles's intervention

Civil / administrative proceedings

Withdrawal of the planning application following Prince Charles's intervention triggered major litigation. The High Court found that Qatari Diar had breached the agreement, while refusing CPC the requested early payment. Candy was the claimant in the dispute, not a party judicially found to have committed wrongdoing.
