Dick Smith Foods closure: Aldi accused of 'extreme capitalism', allegation rejected

No legal proceedings

In announcing the gradual closure of Dick Smith Foods, Smith attributed much of the failure to Aldi's business model, which he called 'extreme capitalism', and its use of cheaper overseas supplies. Aldi rejected this portrayal and highlighted its Australian jobs and suppliers; a retail analyst argued that Aldi was being used as a scapegoat and that price was decisive for consumers.

Australia Day advertisement deemed offensive: parody of asylum seekers and sexual innuendo

No legal proceedings

A Dick Smith Foods advertisement for Australia Day depicted asylum seekers arriving on a beach and contained numerous sexual puns based on his first name. The advertising classification body gave it only a PG classification, preventing its broadcast during 6 pm news slots reserved for G-rated advertisements. The commercial triggered public debate over racism, bad taste and the possibility of a publicity stunt.
