Nigel Farage honours: emails about an OBE, jealousy allegations and calls to expel Carswell from UKIP

No legal proceedings

In early 2017, internal communications were published after Carswell had been asked to support an honour for Nigel Farage. Carswell argued that the emails showed he had tried to obtain an appropriate honour; Farage instead claimed they revealed hostility and jealousy and went so far as to demand his expulsion from UKIP. No separate completed disciplinary process was identified.

Leaving UKIP in 2017 to sit as independent without triggering another by-election

No legal proceedings

On 25 March 2017, Carswell announced his departure from UKIP, saying that his principal objective — withdrawal from the European Union — had been achieved and that he was leaving the party 'amicably, cheerfully and in the knowledge that we won'. He rejected calls from Farage and other party figures to put his seat up for election again. The split formalised years of internal conflict.

Leave campaign: strategic split between Carswell/Vote Leave and Farage/Leave.EU

No legal proceedings

Months before the 2016 referendum, Carswell chose to work with Vote Leave and criticised the methods of the campaign associated with Nigel Farage and Arron Banks. He described the two camps as deeply divided and argued that a campaign broader than UKIP was needed to win. The dispute aggravated personal and strategic divisions within UKIP.

South Thanet 2015: Arron Banks allegation that he passed data to Conservatives to help defeat Farage, categorically denied

No legal proceedings

In August 2016, an Arron Banks company wrote to Kent Police alleging that Carswell had passed Conservatives data about UKIP's South Thanet campaign to help prevent Nigel Farage's election in 2015. Carswell unequivocally rejected the allegation. Separate controversies over Conservative election spending in the constituency do not establish the conduct alleged against Carswell; no public police or court finding substantiating it was identified.

Nigel Farage's policy on HIV-positive migrants: distancing himself, then explicitly criticising its tone

No legal proceedings

Following his election as a UKIP MP in 2014, Carswell declined to unreservedly endorse Nigel Farage's proposal to restrict UK entry for migrants with HIV. In May 2015, he intensified his criticism, arguing that Farage had been wrong in both substance and tone. The episode exposed an internal divide over immigration, public health and political rhetoric.

2015 'Short Money' dispute: refusal of UKIP proposal to use more public funds

No legal proceedings

Following the 2015 election, Carswell's status as UKIP's sole MP entitled the party to 'Short Money' to support opposition parliamentary work. A dispute erupted when the leadership proposed a much larger staff. Carswell rejected the proposal and argued for a smaller operation, triggering a public conflict over the use of public funds and party governance.

2015 confrontation with Nigel Farage: Carswell eventually publicly calls for his resignation

No legal proceedings

Relations between UKIP's sole MP and Nigel Farage progressively deteriorated following the 2015 election. Carswell had already called for a pause in the party leadership before explicitly demanding a change of leader in December. Farage publicly responded by challenging him to launch a formal leadership challenge. The episode was a direct and prolonged party dispute.

Parliamentary expenses: £2 159 repayment following Legg review

Civil / administrative proceedings

As part of the general review of MPs' expenses following the 2009 scandal, Douglas Carswell's case resulted in a request to repay £2 159. Parliamentary documents refer, in particular, to a deposit relating to a previous property and a period of council tax claimed twice during a house move. The amount was repaid in full, and no personal criminal proceedings resulted.

2014 defection from Conservatives to UKIP and voluntary triggering of Clacton by-election

On 28 August 2014, Carswell announced that he was leaving the Conservative Party for UKIP, explaining that David Cameron could not deliver the necessary changes to Europe and the political system. He chose to resign his seat and immediately seek a new mandate from voters. His victory in the Clacton by-election profoundly unsettled the Conservatives and gave UKIP its first directly elected MP.
