2026 war against Iran: presidential condemnation as international law violation and disagreement with government

No legal proceedings

In March 2026, Steinmeier described the war waged by the United States and Israel against Iran as a violation of international law and a disastrous political mistake. His position, far more unequivocal than that of the federal government, triggered debate over his role, his legal interpretation and his defence of the nuclear agreement he had helped negotiate.

Russia policy and Nord Stream 2: public admission of error and rejected visit to Kyiv

No legal proceedings

Following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Steinmeier acknowledged that his commitment to Nord Stream 2 had been a mistake and that his assessment of Vladimir Putin had failed. His longstanding association with Ostpolitik and dialogue with Moscow was heavily reassessed. In April 2022, Kyiv indicated that a planned visit by the German president was not welcome, notably because of that political history.

Congratulatory messages to Iran: criticism after Islamic Republic anniversary and another message sent in 2020

No legal proceedings

In 2019, a congratulatory telegram from Steinmeier to Iran on the anniversary of the Islamic Republic attracted strong criticism, notably from the Central Council of Jews. Steinmeier defended diplomatic practice while criticising Iranian policy. In 2020, another message was sent even though the presidency had indicated that it did not intend to repeat the congratulations; his office described it as an administrative error.
