Migrant workers: British legal action alleging forced labour, settled in 2026 without admission of liability

Civil / administrative proceedings

Following a dispute over the jurisdiction of British courts, the case was allowed to proceed in England. In February 2026, the parties announced a settlement before the High Court, without admission of liability. Dyson consistently denied the allegations, pointing out that the workers were employed by ATA and that the contract with that supplier had been terminated in 2021. The settlement therefore does not constitute a judicial finding that Dyson or James Dyson committed the alleged abuses.

Vacuum cleaner energy labelling: €176.1 million damages claim definitively rejected by CJEU

Civil / administrative proceedings

The EU General Court had rejected the damages claim; on 11 January 2024, the Court of Justice definitively dismissed the appeal, finding that the Commission's breach of EU law was not sufficiently serious to give rise to non-contractual liability. James Dyson was not personally sanctioned: the dispute concerned his companies and the Commission over product regulation.

Agricultural inheritance tax reform: public opposition by major landowner

No legal proceedings

The reform triggered nationwide protests by farmers. Economists and supporters of the reform argued that the previous regime also allowed the very wealthy to use land as a tax vehicle, while the NFU and Dyson maintained that the change threatened investment and farm succession. This is a tax policy dispute involving a direct property interest, without any allegation of unlawful tax evasion.

UK restructuring: approximately 1 000 job cuts, more than a quarter of British workforce

No legal proceedings

Chief Executive Hanno Kirner described the cuts as painful but necessary to preserve an entrepreneurial and agile organisation in highly competitive markets. The event concerns governance and the social impact of a corporate decision under the founder's control; no personal legal wrongdoing by James Dyson has been established.

Daily Mirror: unsuccessful defamation claim over criticism linked to Brexit and Singapore

Civil / administrative proceedings

In December 2023, the High Court dismissed his claim: the honest opinion defence succeeded, and Dyson had not demonstrated serious harm to his reputation. Nevertheless, the judge described him as an honest witness. The judgment does not establish that every political criticism directed at him is objectively factual; it determines the defamation claim.

ATA Malaysia: forced labour allegations at supplier and contract termination by Dyson

Civil / administrative proceedings

The audit summary identified poor accommodation conditions, recruitment problems, deductions and risks of retaliation; ATA maintained that not all forced labour allegations were conclusive. ATA subsequently acknowledged cases of unlawful overtime, and Malaysia prosecuted it for breaches relating to workers' accommodation. Dyson maintained that it had investigated and then terminated the contract because of insufficient progress. Attribution to James Dyson concerns supply chain governance, not a personal offence.

Channel 4: personal defamation claim dismissed in Malaysian working conditions case

Civil / administrative proceedings

The High Court dismissed his personal claim in 2022, finding that the disputed statements did not refer to him personally in a defamatory manner. This outcome is important for attribution: the report concerned the group and its supply chain, but the judgment did not establish that James Dyson himself had exploited workers.

Covid ventilators: direct lobbying of Boris Johnson over employees' tax status

No legal proceedings

Messages disclosed in 2021 showed Johnson promising to 'fix' the issue, fuelling debate about privileged access to the Prime Minister by wealthy individuals and lobbying transparency. Dyson explained that he was responding to a national emergency request, that his company had spent approximately £20 million without receiving public funds for the project, which was ultimately not ordered, and that the objective was tax certainty for his teams. No finding of personal wrongdoing by Dyson was made.

Brexit: relocation of Dyson's global headquarters to Singapore and hypocrisy allegations

No legal proceedings

Politicians condemned a perceived contradiction between his statements about Brexit opportunities for British industry and the relocation of the company's legal and executive centre. Dyson maintained that the decision had nothing to do with Brexit or taxation but was intended to 'future-proof' the group and move closer to its Asian markets; he also maintained research and development investment and jobs in the United Kingdom.

Electric car: abandonment of multi-billion-pound investment project due to lack of commercial viability

No legal proceedings

The group had announced a £2.5 billion technology strategy including the car and planned production in Singapore. Dyson stated that the team had built an excellent car but that no path to profitability was apparent and no buyer for the division had been found. The group sought to redeploy most of the more than 500 employees affected. This was a documented strategic failure, not fraud.
