Succession battle over Murdoch Family Trust pitting Rupert/Lachlan against other children, including James

Civil / administrative proceedings

The confidential Nevada proceedings concerned future control of politically influential media companies. The proposed amendment initially suffered a legal setback; a family agreement reached in 2025 subsequently restructured the interests. James is a party to a family and governance dispute, not the perpetrator of established wrongdoing.

Tesla: shareholder campaigns challenging his independence as director

No legal proceedings

Proxy solicitation letters filed with the SEC cited, in particular, family holidays with Musk and insufficient distance between the board and management. These documents express the position of dissident shareholders, not a regulatory decision finding an unlawful conflict of interest. Tesla defended its board's independence.

21st Century Fox / Sky: proposed takeover considered problematic for media plurality

Civil / administrative proceedings

The CMA concluded that the transaction could operate against the public interest by giving the Murdoch Family Trust too much influence over the British news market, while finding no general failure to meet broadcasting standards. Remedies involving the sale of Sky News were required; Comcast ultimately won the auction. James Murdoch, then Fox CEO and Sky chairman, bore direct executive responsibility for the transaction, but the decision concerned concentration of control, not a personal offence.

Phone hacking: approval of Gordon Taylor settlement followed by parliamentary and Ofcom criticism of his management

No legal proceedings

A parliamentary committee strongly criticised his management, and Ofcom concluded in 2012 that his conduct had, on several occasions, fallen short of the standards expected of a chief executive and chairman. However, Ofcom stated that it had found no evidence that he knew the extent of the criminal conduct or had participated in a cover-up, and Sky remained considered 'fit and proper'. This favourable outcome is essential.
