2026 Epstein Files: comprehensive re-examination of Brunel case and opening of new French network investigations

Investigation

The release of millions of American documents concerning Epstein led the Paris prosecutor's office to order a comprehensive re-examination of the former Brunel file and open new investigative proceedings, notably concerning human trafficking and financial offences. The authorities are seeking to reuse evidence from the 2019–2023 judicial investigation and identify possible responsibilities of other people who can still be prosecuted.

Death investigation closed without prosecution, followed by lawyers' request for administrative inquiry into detention conditions

Investigation

The investigation into the circumstances of Brunel's death was closed without prosecution in spring 2023. Final case dismissal (non-lieu) owing to termination of criminal proceedings: death prevents trial on merits

Case dismissed / dropped

On 28 August 2023, the criminal proceedings concerning Brunel were closed by a final case dismissal (non-lieu) because his death had extinguished the public right to prosecute. No trial therefore enabled a court to determine the merits of the allegations for which he had been formally placed under investigation.

In the same case, investigating judges examined Brunel's possible role in aggravated trafficking of minors for sexual exploitation, notably in connection with the Epstein network. Civil lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein: Brunel and MC2 claim compensation for commercial losses linked to association

Civil / administrative proceedings

In 2015, Brunel and MC2 sued Jeffrey Epstein in Florida, arguing that publicity surrounding Epstein's sexual crimes and the public association between the two men had caused the agency to lose clients, partners and revenue. Brunel thus presented himself as professionally harmed by Epstein's conduct.
