2001–2006 / 2025: Operation Lytton — nine sexual offence convictions and 27 years in prison

Conviction

The offences established in Operation Lytton were committed between 2001 and 2006 against Girl B, who was 13 when the abuse began. Ahmed, a Rochdale trader, was found guilty of four rapes, four counts of indecency with a child and one count of procuring a girl under 21 to have unlawful sexual intercourse. The prosecution's case and the victim's testimony described rapes on a mattress in the 'grim, cold, dark' basement of his shop, among other offences, as well as assaults in a house in Chadderton. Ahmed gave evidence through an interpreter and denied using the basement, claiming that it was damp, full of rubbish and that he had never seen a mattress there. Nevertheless, the jury found him guilty of all nine offences, and he was sentenced to 27 years' imprisonment on 1 October 2025. In mitigation at sentencing, his defence said that he had been seriously assaulted twice while on remand and had lost teeth. This last point is mitigating context in which Ahmed was the victim of third parties' actions, not a controversy or offence attributable to him.

2015: initially falsely denies knowing Zahid and Bashir to police, later acknowledges having lied

No legal proceedings

The prosecutor told the jury that Ahmed had initially told police he did not know Zahid or Bashir before admitting that this statement was false. He subsequently said he knew Zahid and Bashir brought girls into his shop for sexual intercourse, while denying personal involvement. Ahmed explained his original lie by fear of Zahid and Bashir, whom he called 'gangsters', and concern for his children. No separate prosecution for a false statement or obstruction was identified; the event is retained as conduct admitted during the investigation, temporally distinct from the sexual offences themselves.
