"Malinche" Mexican scholarship recipients case: arrest and investigation concerning employment and immigration law, then provisional dismissal

Investigation

Nacho Cano was briefly arrested in July 2024 during an investigation into the circumstances of young Mexicans who had come to Madrid under a programme presented as training scholarships for the musical "Malinche". The investigation concerned possible offences against workers' rights and those of foreign nationals. In April 2025, the Madrid Provincial Court ordered the case provisionally dismissed, finding insufficient evidence of unlawful entry or criminal conduct.

Allegations of political persecution by police and judges, followed by criminal complaints against the investigating judge

Allegations

Following his arrest, Cano claimed that the police and judiciary were targeting him because of his support for Isabel Díaz Ayuso, going so far as to accuse the government of political interference and filing a criminal complaint against the investigating judge for abuse of judicial authority. In October 2025, the TSJM dismissed an initial complaint for lack of jurisdiction, without ruling out its possible submission to another court.
