2015 election: campaign director of Lib Dem disaster and promise to 'eat his hat' over exit poll

No legal proceedings

The party ultimately fell from 56 to eight MPs, an even worse seat result than the exit poll. Ashdown subsequently acknowledged being completely taken by surprise and attributed part of the failure to inaccurate pre-election polls. The controversy concerns strategic responsibility and public embarrassment, not legal wrongdoing.

Bosnia: extensive use of 'Bonn powers' criticised as authoritarian and likened to a 'Raj'

No legal proceedings

The European Stability Initiative argued that these powers perpetuated dependence and weakened local political accountability; the press described a 'Raj'. Ashdown himself acknowledged powers that should make 'a liberal blush', while defending their necessity to overcome obstruction and build a functioning state.

Bosnia 2004: collective dismissal of approximately 60 officials accused of obstructing cooperation with war crimes tribunal

Civil / administrative proceedings

The measure was intended to force authorities to cooperate on war crimes, but strengthened criticism of the lack of adversarial proceedings and appeal mechanisms in the use of Bonn powers. Those dismissed were not automatically found guilty of criminal offences by these administrative decisions.

Secret negotiations with Tony Blair over Lib–Lab coalition and possible Cabinet positions

No legal proceedings

A significant proportion of the leadership and membership of both parties remained uninformed. The subsequent publication of Ashdown's diaries prompted a backlash and strengthened accusations that the Lib Dems were too close to Labour. Ashdown defended the project as an attempt to realign the centre-left.

Support for tougher 1998 anti-terrorism legislation at expense of liberal civil liberties tradition

No legal proceedings

Internal and media critics accused him of abandoning part of the liberal civil rights tradition. The exceptional security circumstances following the attack were central to his defence. This is a controversial political decision, not judicial wrongdoing.

1992 revelation of affair with secretary while leading Liberal Democrats

No legal proceedings

Ashdown chose to acknowledge the relationship promptly and apologise. The tabloid press nicknamed him 'Paddy Pantsdown', but his political reputation survived, and some opinion polls even improved following his direct response.
