The Deb dispute: public allegations, US defamation lawsuit and Australian contractual litigation

Civil / administrative proceedings

Following a breakdown with the producers of her directorial feature debut The Deb, Wilson publicly accused them of misappropriating funds, inappropriate behaviour and obstructing the film's release, among other matters. Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron and Vince Holden denied the accusations and brought a defamation action in California; Wilson counterclaimed. In May 2026, the California Court of Appeal upheld the refusal to dismiss the action at the anti-SLAPP stage, concluding on a procedural basis that the producers had presented a sufficient prima facie case to proceed. Separately, AI Film/DDCC initiated contractual litigation in New South Wales accusing Wilson and her company of sabotage, threats and breaches; Wilson denied the allegations and said she wanted the film released.

MacInnes v Wilson: defamation claim dismissed in 2026, with appeal announced

Case dismissed / dropped

Charlotte MacInnes sued Wilson for defamation and breach of confidence over social media posts alleging, in substance, that MacInnes had changed her account of an uncomfortable situation involving a producer. On 22 July 2026, the Federal Court of Australia dismissed the action: one publication conveyed an imputation but was not found defamatory, and MacInnes had not established the serious harm threshold. She was ordered to pay costs. Her lawyers announced their intention to appeal.

Allegation that she ordered smear websites targeting Amanda Ghost

Civil / administrative proceedings

At the MacInnes v Wilson trial, messages presented in evidence were said to show that Wilson had instructed her crisis management agency to create websites targeting producer Amanda Ghost, including one describing her as an 'Indian Ghislaine Maxwell'. The episode also contributed to separate litigation in the United States.

The allegation concerns an instruction attributed to Wilson to her crisis management agency; Wilson disputes that characterisation.

Allegation of involvement in Snapchat account hacking and leak of Charlotte MacInnes' nude photograph

Civil / administrative proceedings

During the 2026 federal trial, MacInnes alleged that Wilson had participated in orchestrating the hacking of her Snapchat account and the distribution of a nude photograph to people close to her. Wilson described the allegation as outrageous. The judgment dismissing MacInnes' action made no finding on this point.

Allegations against Sacha Baron Cohen in Rebel Rising and legal redactions in several editions

Allegations

In her memoir Rebel Rising, Wilson described her experience on The Brothers Grimsby as the worst of her career and alleged that she had been humiliated, intimidated or pressured into sexual conduct she did not want. Sacha Baron Cohen strongly denied the allegations, calling them false and saying he had documents, footage and witnesses contradicting them. For legal reasons, part of the chapter was redacted in the United Kingdom, while the chapter was removed or redacted in the Australia–New Zealand edition.

Wilson is the author of the published allegations; the conduct alleged against Baron Cohen remains disputed.

LGBTQ+ backlash following promotion of Atlantis The Royal opening in Dubai

No legal proceedings

Wilson attended the opening weekend of Atlantis The Royal in Dubai with her partner and posted promotional content about the stay. Sydney Morning Herald controversy over disclosure of her relationship: privacy breach acknowledged by Press Council

No legal proceedings

A Sydney Morning Herald columnist had given Wilson two days to comment on her relationship with Ramona Agruma. Wilson publicly announced the relationship before publication. The handling of the matter sparked a strong reaction over the risk of outing. The Australian Press Council subsequently found that the article had breached principles concerning privacy and the avoidance of substantial distress or offence without sufficient public interest justification.

Oscars controversy following joke about Cats visual effects

No legal proceedings

At the 2020 Oscars, Rebel Wilson and James Corden, dressed in Cats costumes, joked about the film's visual effects while presenting the award for Best Visual Effects. The Visual Effects Society condemned the segment, arguing that VFX artists were being made scapegoats and the target of a joke when responsibility for the film's reception could not be attributed to them.

Defamation lawsuit against Bauer Media: liability victory followed by substantial reduction in damages

Civil / administrative proceedings

Following eight articles in 2015 portraying her, among other things, as a serial liar about her age, name and childhood, Rebel Wilson sued Bauer Media. A jury found defamation. Damages exceeding 4,7 M AUD were subsequently reduced to 600 000 AUD by the Court of Appeal, which removed compensation for economic losses. In November 2018, the High Court refused special leave to appeal, ending the litigation. The finding of defamation in Wilson's favour was not overturned.
