€862,496 penalty against Vox for revenue treated as anonymous donations, overturned by the Supreme Court in 2026

Civil / administrative proceedings

The Court of Auditors had imposed an 862,496 euro penalty on Vox, considering that revenue from merchandise sales and promotional activities actually constituted cash donations from unidentified sources. In June 2026, the Supreme Court overturned the penalty, finding that the evidence was insufficient to support this reclassification.

The Court of Auditors sanctioned Vox for receiving or accepting earmarked donations prohibited under party-financing law. Two penalties announced in 2024 concerned the 2018–2019 accounts and totalled approximately 233,000 euros. A further penalty of 50,000 euros was announced in 2025 for events dating to 2020.

Loans from Hungarian MBH Bank: Court of Auditors unable to verify full compliance because of bank's lack of cooperation

No legal proceedings

Vox financed its 2023 national and 2024 European election campaigns through multimillion-euro loans from MBH Bank, a Hungarian institution whose shareholders include interests close to the Hungarian state. The Court of Auditors repeatedly noted that the bank had not supplied the information needed to establish fully whether the loans complied with Spanish restrictions on financing from foreign public entities.

Remarks about Sánchez being "colgado de los pies": PSOE complaint and Abascal stands by his words

Allegations

In an interview, Santiago Abascal stated that a time would come when Spaniards would want to see Pedro Sánchez "colgado de los pies" (hanging by his feet). The PSOE referred the remarks to prosecutors, considering that they might legitimise violence against the prime minister. Abascal subsequently stood by and justified his wording.

Vox's initial funding from donors linked to the Iranian opposition and Abascal's salary paid from those funds

No legal proceedings

Vox's accounts showed that almost all its start-up resources and approximately 80% of its 2014 European election campaign were financed by hundreds of donations from supporters linked to the National Council of Resistance of Iran. Contributions totalled approximately 970,000 euros and were used in part to pay salaries, including Abascal's.

DENAES: public subsidies and unclear origins of a substantial proportion of donations during Abascal's presidency

The Fundación para la Defensa de la Nación Española (DENAES), chaired by Abascal until 2014, declared nearly one million euros in income over a decade. The foundation received more than 276,000 euros in grants from the Community of Madrid between 2008 and 2012, while its accounts did not always identify the donors or origins of numerous private contributions.
