2013–2017

Longstanding scepticism towards battery-electric vehicles and prioritisation of hybrids and hydrogen

No legal proceedings

Uchiyamada repeatedly stated that battery-electric vehicles still faced limitations in cost, range and charging and were not ready for mass adoption, while defending hybrids and fuel cells. These positions fuelled criticism that Toyota was falling behind in the transition to fully electric vehicles.
