CDU donations scandal: receipt of 100 000 DM envelope from Karlheinz Schreiber, contradictory accounts and resignation as CDU leader

Investigation

In January 2000, Schäuble acknowledged personally receiving a cash donation of 100 000 DM from arms dealer Karlheinz Schreiber for the CDU in 1994. The amount had not been properly declared in party accounts. His account of the money's handling was contradicted by former treasurer Brigitte Baumeister. The crisis led him to resign as CDU chairman and parliamentary group leader.
