TotalEnergies: allegation of complicity in war crimes, defamation complaint, Senate recusal then acquittal in 2025

Acquitted / conviction overturned

At the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Yannick Jadot accused TotalEnergies of being 'complicit in war crimes' because it continued operating in Russia. The group filed a defamation complaint. After becoming a senator and rapporteur of an inquiry committee into TotalEnergies, Jadot recused himself from hearings concerning Russia because of the litigation. On 6 June 2025, the Paris Criminal Court acquitted him.
