Italian 'enhanced repo' transactions: Sewing's role in approval/audit and conflict-of-interest allegations after acquittals

Civil / administrative proceedings

Complex transactions involving Italian banks, notably linked to the Monte dei Paschi case, led to prosecutions in Italy against former Deutsche Bank employees. Sewing, then responsible for risk and later internal audit, had participated in approving a comparable transaction and subsequently supervised audits. After several former employees were definitively acquitted, civil actions alleged that the bank had unfairly singled them out and that Sewing's role created a conflict of interest.

Russia: statement that full withdrawal would be 'against our values', followed by reversal the next day

No legal proceedings

Following the invasion of Ukraine, Sewing initially stated that a complete exit from Russia would run counter to the bank's values because it needed to continue supporting certain international clients. The position drew strong criticism, and Deutsche Bank announced the very next day that it would wind down operations and cease new business in Russia.
