Criminal justice 'big bang' and guilty pleas for serious crimes: magistrates' and lawyers' opposition, committee rejection and withdrawal

No legal proceedings

Darmanin proposed a major overhaul of criminal law, including reducing suspended sentences, mandatory minimums, changes to sentence adjustments and a guilty plea procedure for certain serious crimes. Judges and lawyers strongly opposed several measures, particularly negotiated criminal proceedings. Following rejection of the bill in a National Assembly committee in June 2026, Darmanin withdrew the guilty plea proposal for serious crimes.
