July 2026: attempted return to WEF in advisory role, requests to trustees and legal threats

No legal proceedings

The Wall Street Journal and subsequently Reuters reported that Schwab had written to WEF trustees requesting an advisory role that would notably give him a voice in selecting the future leadership. The WSJ also reported a list of demands, threats of legal proceedings and an ongoing dispute with the leadership team following his departure agreement.

July 2026: internal documents reported by WSJ partly contradict public summary of 2025 investigation

Investigation

In July 2026, the Wall Street Journal claimed to have reviewed internal documents showing that independent investigators had identified elements of misconduct involving, among other things, discrimination, bullying, use of funds and data integrity, whereas the WEF's public statement in August 2025 had concluded that there was no 'material wrongdoing'. The newspaper also reported that Schwab had sought to prevent certain findings from being published.

July 2026: alleged discovery of listening device in his private office and criminal complaint in Geneva

Investigation

Schwab's spokesperson announced that a security inspection of his Geneva home had discovered a concealed listening device in his private office. Schwab filed a criminal complaint against persons unknown with the Geneva authorities. An initial estimate suggested that the device might have been installed during the preceding three years.

August 2026: unresolved tensions with Schwab become an explicit issue in WEF leadership succession

No legal proceedings

As the WEF sought a lasting successor to lead the organisation, reports from Bloomberg and the Swiss press indicated that Christine Lagarde was willing to consider the chairmanship but wanted to ensure that tensions between the organisation and Klaus Schwab were fully resolved. The dispute with the founder therefore remained a tangible factor in the succession more than a year after his departure.

2017–2025: recurring criticism of his remuneration, WEF financial transparency and public funding of security

No legal proceedings

Klaus Schwab's annual remuneration, around one million Swiss francs/dollars depending on the year and available tax sources, regularly attracted criticism, particularly because the WEF is a foundation benefiting from a special tax status and Swiss public authorities contribute to the security costs of the Davos summit. Elected officials also called for greater transparency concerning the organisation's finances.

Investigation

The Financial Times reported that preliminary findings from the internal investigation referred to approximately CHF 900,000 in personal expenditure or expenditure insufficiently connected to WEF activities, as well as questions about the integrity of certain rankings. 15 August 2025: independent investigation closed — no material wrongdoing by Klaus Schwab, but minor irregularities and need for stronger governance

Investigation

The WEF Board of Trustees announced the conclusion of an investigation conducted by an independent firm. According to its statement, no evidence of material wrongdoing by Klaus Schwab or misconduct by Hilde Schwab was found. The board nevertheless acknowledged minor irregularities linked to blurred boundaries between personal contributions and Forum operations and announced stronger governance measures.

September 2025: new questions about statutes and remuneration in 2018–2024 following his departure

No legal proceedings

Following the 2025 investigation, Le Temps noted that the WEF's statutes and regulations, dating from 2015, described a single executive position at the top, whereas between 2018 and 2024 two paid executives, Schwab and Børge Brende, performed parallel executive functions. The newspaper also questioned the consistency between certain internal remuneration criteria and observed practices.

2023–2024: governance criticism over the WEF's family-run character and his son Olivier's positions

No legal proceedings

Some employees and observers described the WEF as operating like a family business. Klaus Schwab's son, Olivier Schwab, was among the Forum's Managing Directors, while his wife Hilde and other family members held or had held positions connected to the WEF ecosystem. This concentration fuelled criticism of nepotism and insufficiently institutionalised succession.

In June 2020, Schwab presented the 'Great Reset' as an opportunity to redirect economies after the COVID-19 shock towards stakeholder capitalism, sustainability and greater public-private cooperation. The project provoked substantial political opposition and became one of the main focuses of conspiracy theories targeting Schwab and the WEF.

1998–2000: $8 million USWeb contract followed by Schwab joining its board with stock options — conflict-of-interest controversy

No legal proceedings

In 1998, the World Economic Forum awarded USWeb a contract worth approximately $8 million. Thirteen days later, Klaus Schwab joined USWeb's board of directors and received options on 25,000 shares. When the WEF subsequently sought to exit the contract, it was transferred to another company linked to Schwab, Industry to Industry (i2i), in which he also held interests. The matter triggered substantial controversy over the boundary between the non-profit foundation and its founder's private business activities.
