Julien Bayou affair: external investigation, call for testimony, criminal case closed and continued criticism of case management

Case dismissed / dropped — against a third party

Protagonist not prosecuted — these proceedings are not counted in their formal charges or convictions.

Under Marine Tondelier's leadership, Les Écologistes commissioned Pisan in 2024 to review the Julien Bayou case and issued a call for testimony to approximately 12,000 current and former members. The method was criticised on grounds of the presumption of innocence and transparency. After criminal proceedings against Bayou were closed without further action in January 2025 because no offence had been identified, the leadership expressed regret over the consequences suffered by the former MP. In 2026, disclosure of testimony from a former partner and an internal exchange between Tondelier and Sandrine Rousseau renewed criticism concerning the information held and shared by the leadership.

No legal proceedings

2027 presidential election: internal rebellion, consultation found irregular, then support for independent candidacy option

No legal proceedings

Selected in late 2025 to represent Les Écologistes in a left-wing primary, Marine Tondelier increasingly supported the option of an independent candidacy if the primary failed. Internal opponents disputed the change in the scope of her mandate and the procedure adopted. On 25 June 2026, the party's statutory council found the planned consultation 'irregular' because it lacked a legal basis approved by the federal council and reclassified it as a purely indicative internal opinion survey. On 6 July, approximately 65% of votes cast nevertheless supported an independent candidacy should the primary fail.

Allegations

Following a tense demonstration in Auch surrounding Bertrand Venteau's trial, a post published on Marine Tondelier's page incorrectly attributed to Lionel Candelon statements suggesting that farmers could disregard regulations and wrongly identified him as president of Coordination rurale in Gers. Candelon, who chairs the Gers Chamber of Agriculture, announced a complaint for defamation and malicious denunciation.

2025 Les Écologistes congress: allegations of 'rigging the process', voting complexity and questions over Cap Collectif

No legal proceedings

Preparations for Les Écologistes' 2025 congress prompted strong internal criticism of the complexity and transparency of the process, involving approximately 45 votes spread over several ballots and a substantial delay in publishing some results. The use of service provider Cap Collectif for a contract worth approximately €20,000 also raised questions because a former executive of the company had become Marine Tondelier's chief of staff. Debate additionally concerned relaxation of certain rules against holding multiple offices and the role of internal figures such as Éric Piolle.

No legal proceedings

Opposing the EU–Mercosur agreement, Marine Tondelier claimed its implementation would cause 5% additional deforestation in the Amazon over six years. A TF1 fact-check concluded that the underlying study instead suggested a possible acceleration of approximately 5% a year during the tariff reduction period across all ecosystems concerned, not just the Amazon.

Non-organic lettuce 'costing society €17–27': attribution and extrapolation challenged

No legal proceedings

Marine Tondelier claimed that conventional lettuce sold for approximately 70 cents actually cost society between €17 and €27 once its negative externalities were included, and subsequently attributed the calculation to the Court of Auditors. AFP established that the figure derived from a theoretical extrapolation repeated by MEP Benoît Biteau and could not be used to calculate the overall cost of one lettuce.
