International aid: direct opposition to Labour government over reduction from 0.5% to 0.3% of GNI

No legal proceedings

As chair of the International Development Committee, Champion strongly opposed Keir Starmer's decision to reduce official development assistance from 0.5% to 0.3% of GNI to increase defence spending. She called the decision a false economy and repeatedly criticised the consequences of the cuts for fragile countries, healthcare, education, women and girls, and conflict prevention.

Palestine: coordination of 221, then 255 MPs calling for recognition, followed by increased pressure over Israeli settlements

No legal proceedings

In July 2025, Champion coordinated a cross-party letter initially signed by 221 MPs from nine parties, later reaching 255 parliamentarians, calling on the British government to recognise the State of Palestine. The campaign increased pressure on Downing Street while the government hesitated over the timing of recognition. In 2026, she continued demanding a stronger response to settlements and violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Packaging EPR: criticism of her own government's policy to protect glass industry jobs in Rotherham

No legal proceedings

Champion led a parliamentary debate opposing the way the Labour government was implementing Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging. She argued that the calculation of fees, heavily linked to material weight, disproportionately penalised glass, threatened contracts and jobs in the United Kingdom and could paradoxically encourage a shift towards more plastic.

Grooming gangs 2025: break with government's initial position and call for new national inquiry

Investigation

In January 2025, while the Labour government was still resisting calls for a new statutory national inquiry into grooming gangs, Champion publicly broke with that position. She presented a five-point plan combining implementation of IICSA recommendations, a national audit, an investigation into institutional failures, research into perpetrators' motivations and a review of the law.

Just West Yorkshire: report accusing Champion of fuelling racism, then Charity Commission criticism of methods and governance

No legal proceedings

In 2018, Just West Yorkshire published its report 'A Temperature Check' on the consequences of Champion's 2017 remarks and issued a press release claiming, among other things, an increase in racist abuse towards the Pakistani community. Champion denounced what she regarded as a campaign to discredit her. The Charity Commission subsequently expanded its examination of the organisation to include the report.

Jane Collins / UKIP: false allegation of knowledge of Rotherham abuse, £54,000 damages awarded to Champion

Civil / administrative proceedings

At UKIP's 2014 conference, MEP Jane Collins claimed that Sarah Champion, Kevin Barron and John Healey had known about child sexual exploitation in Rotherham and deliberately failed to act. The High Court held that the speech carried defamatory meanings. Following an offer of amends, each of the three MPs, including Champion, was awarded £54,000 in damages in February 2017.

The Sun 2017: remarks about British Pakistani men, accusations of stigmatisation, apology and resignation

No legal proceedings

In an opinion piece published by The Sun after convictions for sexual exploitation in Newcastle, Champion argued that a form of grooming observed in several towns disproportionately involved British Pakistani men and that fear of accusations of racism could prevent the problem from being addressed. The published assertion that Britain had a problem with British Pakistani men raping and exploiting white girls triggered strong accusations of stigmatisation and racism.

Rotherham child sexual exploitation: campaign for institutional accountability and reform of grooming offence

No legal proceedings

Following her election in Rotherham and revelations of widespread institutional failures involving child sexual exploitation, Champion made victim protection and legal reform central to her parliamentary work. With Barnardo's, she chaired a parliamentary inquiry and proposed amending Section 15 of the Sexual Offences Act so that a single prior contact, rather than two, could suffice for the offence of meeting a child following sexual grooming.
