Reliance Petroleum 2007: derivatives sanctions and alleged manipulation, followed by major reversals in 2023 and 2026

Civil / administrative proceedings

The 2007 Reliance Petroleum transactions gave rise to several SEBI proceedings. In January 2021, SEBI imposed penalties of ₹150 million on Mukesh Ambani and ₹250 million on RIL in a case involving transactions deemed manipulative. In December 2023, the SAT overturned the relevant sanctions against Ambani and several entities. In a separate aspect, the Supreme Court ruled in May 2026 that exceeding position limits was insufficient to establish the fraudulent or manipulative intent attributed to RIL and ordered reimbursement.

KG-D6 / ONGC: multibillion-dollar gas migration dispute, conflicting decisions and appeal still pending

Civil / administrative proceedings

ONGC maintained that some gas from its adjacent blocks had migrated into the KG-D6 block operated by Reliance and that RIL had obtained an undue benefit. The government claimed approximately $1.55 billion in 2016. An arbitral tribunal ruled in RIL's favour in 2018, a decision subsequently upheld by a single judge, but a Division Bench of the Delhi High Court reversed the outcome in February 2025, leading the ministry to issue a demand for approximately $2.81 billion. RIL appealed to the Supreme Court; in 2026, the parties were also exploring mediation.
